When buying any lime insist you are supplied with a Lime WA specification sheet as shown below. Members of the Lime WA Accredited Lime Suppliers group undergo regular testing of their stock so you can be sure of the quality of your purchase. Ensure the integrity of the report shown in the box highlighted red below.
The particle size distribution by % weight is an important factor in lime quality. A larger proportion of smaller particles will lead to a greater increase in pH. Ensure the highest proportion of the product is under half a millimeter shown in the box highlighted blue below.
The Neutralising Value (NV) represents lime purity. A higher NV will increase pH more for a given particle size distribution. Ensure the weighted average NV is over 90% shown in the box highlighted green below.
The Effective Neutralising Value (ENV) calculated from the online lime calculator takes both particle size and neutralising value into account when comparing different limes.
